So, Mom has passed away and all the arrangements are being made. My evil sister put me on the program to say a few remarks about mother. Dispite my refusals, she put me on the program so I guess I have to give a talk now. Mormons think that everyone wants to give a talk. Not always true.
So, I am putting down humerous things I can say about Mom. I came up with a few, my siblings want me to tell the rabbit story which will send Onnie's kids running from the room since they have baby rabbits.
I remembered that Mom would tell a joke, only one joke that she just loved. I told it to Craig, Barb and BreeAnn. They all said it could not be said at the funeral, it could send Aunt Marcy into cardiac arrest. (and all Catholic relatives). So, I will tell the joke here for your entertainment. It goes like this:
A nun and a prostitute were talking. The nun asked the hooker how much she earned doing what she does. THe prostitute shows the nun her fur coat, her diamond ear rings, her glittery neck lace and huge jeweled rings on her hands and told the nun these are the things she got for doing what she does. The nun mutters, "and that cheap Father Thomas only gives us Hershey bars!"
That is the ONLY joke I every heard Mom tell and she loved that joke.

Teresa is gone today
As I write this, Teresa is getting ready to "take a day off." She will be gone from 8am to 8pm. Barb will take the first six hours of looking after Mom and I will take the last six hours. Neither of us have had to deal with Mom's "bathroom needs."
I haven't a clue what to do about putting her on a bed pan.
We could have gotten some volunteers to stay with her but they are not trained in this need. What is the point to have a stranger in with Mom for four hours that is just as worthless as Barb and me in this department.
Food? Anything she wants. I'll run to MCDonalds or get some Chinese or fried chicken. If she doesn't want to eat, so what? As long as she gets her can of ensure, I'll consider that a success.
Mom will survive this, Barb and I might not.

Mom
The plan was that Mom was going to Zilber Hospice for five days so Teresa could get some time off. She has not had more than ten or twelve hours in a row off for only a few times. You can count on one hand the number of times she has had even a few hours off.
Today, nurse Judy said Mom has been slipping and it would not be wise to send Mom "on vacation." I sort of agree. Even though we have been reminding her of her up coming vacation, I think when she wakes up in a strange place, she will not be happy or know where she is.
It turns out Teresa really doesnt want the time off. So no one will get a vacation.
Teresa will get time off this Thursday for twelve hours. Barb and I will cover, maybe a person from hospice care for four hours.
Mom has a reoccuring dream about being left alone at St Mary's and she yells and yells for someone to come help her but no one is there. Then Joe Ramstack (an old friend of the family, dead thirty or more years but lives across the street from St Mary's) rescues her. Some times Teresa come for her. I can see her having this dream at the hospice and then a stranger comes to get her. She wouldn't be happy.
Nurse Judy thinks it will be just a short time before Mom passes. Yesterday she slept all day. Craig and Barb went in, yelled, touched her and she just slept. I had the same reaction an hour later, couldn't wake her. She eats less and less. She does get a can of
Ensure a day.

Mom's House
Mom's house is over 61 years old. When I was born she brought me back to this house. Her first night in the house was my first night in the house. It's falling apart in places.
Judy called the weatherization program in the county. We heard they do things like replace windows and insulate the house. We did manage to get close to $600 paid on her electric bill months ago. We have waited for them to inspect the house.
Finally a "pre inspection" happened yesterday.
Unfortunately they havae run out of money to do windows
They do replace furnaces, water heaters and insulate.
They inspected the entire house and said the cracking of walls in the basement would have to be replaced to do any work on the house. That won't happen so the above mentioned things are not available. That doesn't matter anyway since the furnace and water heater are not old enough to replace. The insulation is good and doesn't need any more. So what can they do?
They do give new refrigerators.
Mom's looks good but it is old. They will give a smaller (14cf) white one. They will also come in a replace light bulbs with the new energy efficient ones. That will happen within the next two months.
So, Mom get something free. Free is always good.

Dad, this time
I was at a restaurant with Criag, Barb, Judy and Bill today. We had a nice meal (except for the old fish Judy had to exchange). The subject turned to hair color. Craig has long had white hair. Craig's oldest son, now 41, is also all white. Comment was made about our father having blond hair when he died at age 61. It was blond, yellow, except around the ears where it turned white.
Barb piped up that every time our mother died her hair (ash blond) dad would get a comb full of dye and comb it in his hair! Judy and I were shocked. We had no clue. People always commented on my dad keeping his hair color and not turning grey/white.
A family secret revealed

Mom
One several occations, Mom has gotton cravings and won't eat anything but what she wants.
Typically, I would get to Mom's and she has told Teresa that I am bringing KFC. I don't know that so I get to Mom's and she is sitting at the kitchen table, empty plate in front of her and she is chomping at the bit waiting for her chicken. I have to run out and get fried chicken for her and she is happy
A while ago she wanted a hamburger. She wouldn't eat anything Teresa made. I did her grocery shopping and picked up a hamburger at Mc Donalds. She was happy.
Today, Teresa called me and said Mom has been talking about BBQ pork sandwhich and that I was going to bring her one. McRib is not available right now at McD's but I remember a BBQ pork sandwich advertised at Gillie's Custard Stand, right on the way to Mom's. I stopped at Gillie's and ordered one. The counter man said it was last month's sandwich and is not available now. I told him i have to have a BBQ sandwich. He told me to wait, he will check the freezer and see if there are any left. He came back and told me they have ONE left and they will make it. I also ordered a favorite of Mom's, a hot fudge sundae with pecans.
I got to Moms with the sundae and the sandwich. Teresa had some food out that Mom didn't touch. Teresa is telling Mom I have the BBQ she has been asking for all day. She has a blank look in her eyes. Teresa keeps reminding her of what she was asking for but Mom has forgotten and wants nothing to do with the sandwich. The sundae? She wolfed half if it down right away. Mom can complain that she has no room for food but ice cream? Always has room for ice cream.
Teresa takes such good care of Mom. Mom's story of the week is that Teresa attacked her with two knives. Grandson Craigie is the one that called the police but they didn't do anything. Teresa must be a really lousy attacker to miss someone that is in bed and can't move!
Teresa is getting a visitor almost every day this week. I've had a busy week and this week end I'll be busy so she can take care of Pepper. She loves having him over. At least he eats.
Although I tell funny stories about Mom, she is not always in fantacy land. She has had the wild stories about killing Virgie with a base ball (Mom hit the ball with a bat, ball hit Virgie) or she kicked the soccer ball, it hit Marcy and she died. We closest to her find the storied inventive and wonder how she ever thought of these stories. Sometime we can figure out where she might have come up with such nonsence. Sometimes not. She does have some lucid moments especially when talking about the past or what her opinion is.
